A sensitive and amusing story of human behaviour. Antonio Boncore is poor and about to lose his job as a porter. The outlook is grim, indeed, when an old friend who used to work in the mint calls him to his bedside and, as a last request, asks him to destroy a money plate and a roll of filigree paper. Antonio is about to destroy this money-making material, but his poverty and dismal future make him think. He invites two equally impoverished friends to join him in putting the plate and paper to good use by printing money! But fate throws a roadblock in Antonio's path. His son appears unannounced and happens to be not only his son but also the police inspector for the mint! Antonio naturally is shaken. His first impulse is to let his son arrest him and gain promotion for his good job. But logic and good sense prevail and Antonio and his two penniless pals destroy the plate and paper and the chance of prosperity.
