A cinematographer's troupe arrives at a castle to get some stills that should be used for the cover of some criminal novels. The castle-owner, Anderson, gives them permission to stay a whole day, also because he has recognized among the troupe his ex-fiancée Edith. But, as the troupe invade the castle's cellars, which he had particularly excluded from their programme, Anderson goes mad. He believes himself to be the incarnation of the scarlet hangman, who lived centuries before in the castle and was buried in its cellars. He begins to kill everyone in the troupe one by one. It is only thanks to the courage of the writer Rick that Edith is saved as well as several other people and, in the end, Anderson is killed.
