Anna leads a dull and empty life next to her paralyzed husband until she meets and falls in love with Franco. It's the autumn of 1943 and the fascist party of Ferrara is trying to reorganize after the recent dramatic events. The fascists are divided. Aretusi, aiming to obtain the leadership of the party orders the assassination of Bolognesi, the present leader, a moderate. The murder is blamed on the partisans thus a ferocious reprisal follows. Many antifascists are taken hostage and shot, among them Franco's father. Anna learns that the reprisal was carried out by Aretusi himself and rushes to inform Franco. But Franco decides he's had enough of the entire situation and leaves for Switzerland. Anna returns to her job as a cashier and to her sad and lonely life.
