Don Luigi is a charitable priest whose rectory is open to anyone in need. He offers shelter to Lisetta, a young orphan, in spite of the opposition of his sister, Angelica, with whom he lives. He helps various people deal with their unhappy situations: a man who has assaulted and robbed a carpenter seeks his help; there's Giacomo, who is in love with Lisetta; there's Maritta, a neighbor's daughter, who is pregnant by the priest's nephew. Don Luigi straightens things out and everyone is happy, even Angelica whose secret desire was to have her son marry Lisetta thus enabling her to get her hands on the girl's inheritance
