To develop his "speaking telegraph", the first model of the telephone, Antonio Meucci takes a job as a mechanic in a theatre in South America. His experiments distract him, however, to a point where he accidentally sets fire to the theatre. He goes to North America where he manages a candle factory but, here too, things go wrong! His wife's serious illness forces him to sell all his equipment to an American company which appreciates the importance of his invention, takes possession of his instruments and enters into possession of the patent. Meucci sues the company, manages to prove that he is the authentic inventor of the gadget and has first rights to the invention of the telephone.
