An announcement is made in Rome by a film company that they are looking for a little girl for a role in a film to be shot at Cinecittà. Maddalena decides to take her child, Maria, to the interview and dreams for her a glorious future. Although Maria is not pretty, to her mother she is beautiful. In Cinecittà Maddalena bumps into an assistant of the director who promises to help her if she gives him fifty thousand lire. When Maria steps on the stage for the interview, the director and the troupe start laughing because of the child's clumsy and awkward appearance. Maddalena leaves in anger with the child ignoring the director who sees great expressiveness in the child and would offer her a good contract.
