Description

Alina takes her sick husband Paolo's place among a group of smugglers that operate along the French-Italian border. A Frenchman and his wife Maria furnish the smugglers with merchandise. Giovanni, who works for the Frenchman is Maria's lover, but he is strongly attracted by Alina. One of the smugglers, Marco, is also infatuated with Alina. In a fight that breaks out between Marco and Paolo, the latter dies. The village people unjustly blame Alina and are hostile to her, but Giovanni tries to console her. Maria, jealous, denounces the smugglers to the police, but her husband kills her. While fleeing across the border Marco tries to kill Giovanni, but falls from a cliff and dies.
